Kansas Corn Market Overview

Kansas wheat cash prices follow Kansas City Board of Trade HRW futures. Corn and sorghum are heavily influenced by feedlot demand in the southwest Kansas cattle corridor.

Corn is planted in Kansas from late April through late May, with harvest running from September through November. Spring and early summer price movements often reflect weather risk premium during pollination and grain fill.

Understanding Kansas Corn Basis

Kansas corn basis runs 20–45¢ negative, widest in the panhandle and tightest near Wichita-area ethanol plants. Wheat basis depends heavily on protein content (11.5%+ premium).

When and how to use basis in your marketing plan: Most Kansas corn producers use a combination of cash sales at harvest, hedge-to-arrive (HTA) contracts, and basis contracts to manage price risk. Forward contracting 20–30% of expected production before planting can lock in historically strong spring prices.
