Idaho Corn Market Overview

Idaho grain prices follow Portland terminal markets. Barley for Coors/Anheuser-Busch malting provides a significant premium over feed barley. Potato demand is the dominant ag market.

Corn is planted in Idaho from late April through late May, with harvest running from September through November. Spring and early summer price movements often reflect weather risk premium during pollination and grain fill.

Understanding Idaho Corn Basis

Idaho wheat basis runs 20–40¢ negative relative to CBOT. Malting barley can command $1–2/bu premium over feed barley depending on quality specifications.

When and how to use basis in your marketing plan: Most Idaho corn producers use a combination of cash sales at harvest, hedge-to-arrive (HTA) contracts, and basis contracts to manage price risk. Forward contracting 20–30% of expected production before planting can lock in historically strong spring prices.
